Faking Beautiful. Mary Katrantzou

Mary KatrantzouMary Katrantzou is a young Greek-born print designer who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and then Central Saint Martins.  With training in both Textile and Fashion Textile Design, and inspiration from both Russian Constructivism and 70’s movie posters, she has created a collection of wearables that shock and impress.

For her Fall/Winter 2009 Collection, she was awarded the British Fashion Council’s New Gen Sponsorship supported by Topshop to show at London Fashion Week.

Her use of a graphic, hyperrealist aesthetic summons an impression that the huge neckpieces would be too heavy to wear as Katarantzou invokes the use of Trompe L’oeil to create the illusion of oversized jewelry. The feature digital prints on bonded zip dresses render the wearer both powerful and beautiful as the symmetry plays against the female shape.
